The Director of Research

The founder and director of research, Temistocle Franceschi, graduated from the University of Florence with a thesis on Glottology, since 1960 has been in Turin as assistant to Giuliano  Bonfante, and as principal dialect researcher for all of Italy in order to the "Atlante Linguistico Italiano" directed by Benvenuto Terracini. The translation for Einaudi of half of the "Historische Grammatik der italienischen Sprache und ihrer Mundarten" by Gerhard Rohlfs produced two series of critical observations which led to a long friendship.

In the two years 1968-1970 he completed a series of research, in large part still unpublished, for the National Council of Research on italian colonies of immigrants in Latin America research. In 1970, he held the Chair of Italian Dialectology in Urbino. Here he devised and co-ordinated (besides a Centre for Research and Study of Fine Arts of the Region Marche) an enterprise entitled "Atlante Paremiologico Italiano" (API), which was intended to be the collection in the field of living proverbial sayings in the Italian oral tradition. On this experience a new discipline, Geoparoemiology (or Geographical Paroemiology) was founded.

In 1980 he was called to Florence where he transformed the API into a vast electronic archive and in order to accelerate the completion of the work, he created and co-ordinated this "Centro Interuniversitario di Geoparemiologìa". For many years he has been asked to be part of the scientific Council of the A.L.L. as well as two other academies. Apart from being a member of two Academies, he is also a member of the Scientific Council of the "Atlante Linguistico Italiano".

Obviously, his main interests tend towards on non-paroemiologic aspects just as with his work: among which, other than the collaboration with Benvenuto Terracini in the "Saggio di un Atlante linguistico della Sardegna" (Turin, 1964), are volumes and articles:
